Smart feeders promise portion control and fewer skipped meals. We set up five models in real homes for a month to see which ones are worth the counter space.
What “smart” actually buys you
A Wi-Fi feeder mainly adds scheduled portions and a phone alert when the bowl empties. If you are home for every meal, a plain timed feeder does 80% of the job for a third of the price.
The failure modes nobody mentions
Wi-Fi drops, kibble bridges inside the hopper, and power outages. The models we kept all had a manual override and a backup battery, which the cheap ones lacked.
Portion accuracy
We weighed every dispense for a week. The best unit landed within 2 grams of its setting; the worst drifted by nearly a full tablespoon, enough to matter for a dieting cat.
